Featured Topic: "Why Business Value is Hard...and What You Can Do About It"

Whether you’re trying to develop a traditional business case, or rank a set of user stories for an agile team, it’s very difficult to figure out what each piece of functionality is worth. And once you deliver, you usually find that the value you got has little relationship to the value you expected. Figuring out value is supposed to be central to good business analysis practice, so why can’t we get it right?

As it happens, there are very good reasons why not, reasons rooted in uncertainty and in human psychology. In this session, you’ll learn what those reasons are, why we’re bad at figuring out what value should look like, and why a decision that seems clear-cut on the numbers isn’t the one that gets made. Just as importantly, you’ll learn why you need to work it out anyway, and how you can position discussion of value in a way that helps your change initiatives produce better outcomes.

Speaker:  Kevin Brennan

Speaker Bio: Kevin Brennan is an executive and business analysis consultant who helps companies create new business models, develop new products and services, and improve their business processes. After two decades of leadership in the business analysis profession, he knows how to define and execute clear strategies that deliver important changes with limited resources, and that an idea is only as good as your team’s ability to understand and execute on it. Kevin played a leading role in the launch of the International Institute of Business Analysis (IIBA) and the Canadian Federation of Library Associations (CFLA-FCAB), led the creation and development of the Guide to the Business Analysis Body of Knowledge (BABOK® Guide), and has taught business analysis, process improvement, and new product development on every continent (except Antarctica).
